Moving from Within or from Outside Canada?

Welcome to British Columbia (B.C)! You have 90 days to switch over your licence after moving to B.C. If you are new to B.C. and have to take a driving test to receive a B.C. driver’s license, we can help.

We can teach you the rules of the road and show you what you need to know to pass the B.C. Class 5 or Class 7 road test.

Getting a licence

  • A newcomer to British Columbia who holds a driver’s licence from another province or country is required to apply for a B.C. driver’s licence within 90 days of taking up residence in the province.
  • If you have a licence from the United States, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea or another province of Canada, you may not need to take the knowledge test or road test. You can apply for a B.C. licence right away.If your driver’s licence is from anywhere else, you will need to take a knowledge test and a road test. Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) driver licensing offices have books you can study for the knowledge test. They are in English only.
  • To apply for a B.C. driver’s licence, you must be 16 years or older, and have to show two pieces of identification.
