To get your N, you’ll need to pass the Class 7 road test. Your earliest test date will be printed on your Learner’s licence. You can take your road test as long as you’ve had your L for at least 12 months and have stayed prohibition-free.

Driving as a Novice

When you have completed the learner’s phase, you will take the Class 7 road test. If you pass this test, you will receive a Class 7N license. This is the novice stage and it will last for at least 24 months before you can take the final road test for your full license. You can reduce this time by taking an approved driver education course.

Class 7N drivers are still subject to a set of restrictions to ensure that they proceed to improve driving ability slowly and carefully and do not become distracted on the road.

Want to reduce your Novice (N) stage by six months?

You can reduce your Novice (N) licence stage by six months by taking an ICBC-approved driver education course. The approved course must be taken while you are still in the Learner’s (L) stage and you must be prohibition free, not get any violation tickets, or have any at-fault crashes in order to keep your six month reduction.

Novice licence driving restrictions

Having an N means you are now a novice driver and are allowed to drive on your own. It’s important to follow the restrictions of graduated licensing when you get your N. If you violate these restrictions or get any other tickets or prohibitions, you must pay graduated licensing penalties.

No blood alcohol: You must not drive with any alcohol in your body​

Display N sign: Display N sign on the back of your vehicle​

No electronic devices: No hand-held or hands-free electronic devices​

Limit one passenger: 1 passenger only (immediate family exempt) unless with supervisor age 25+ with a valid Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence.​
